Pet Memorial Headstones: A Guide to Honouring Your Companion
Losing a beloved pet is a genuine bereavement. A granite memorial headstone or plaque is a dignified and lasting way to honour the companion who shared your life.
The bond between a person and their pet is unlike any other. Dogs, cats, horses, and other animals become woven into the fabric of daily life — their absence, when it comes, leaves a real and profound gap. The grief that follows the loss of a pet is entirely valid, and it deserves to be marked with the same care and dignity as any other bereavement.
A granite memorial headstone or plaque provides a permanent, weatherproof tribute that can stand in a garden, be placed in a dedicated pet cemetery, or mark a grave in a paddock or private land. Unlike wooden crosses or ceramic markers, granite will not warp, fade, or deteriorate — it will remain as a lasting testament to the animal who enriched your life.
At Magic Memorials, we have crafted pet memorials for dogs, cats, horses, rabbits, guinea pigs, birds, and many other companions. Every one is made with the same quality of granite and craftsmanship we apply to human memorials. There is no memorial too small, and no grief too minor for our care.
Memorials by Animal
Dogs
Dog memorial headstones are our most frequently requested pet memorials. A laser-etched portrait of your dog — taken from a clear, well-lit photograph — can be reproduced with remarkable accuracy on black granite, capturing the individual character of your pet rather than a generic breed silhouette.
Popular inscription choices include the dog's name, dates, breed, and a short phrase such as "Faithful friend and companion" or simply "Good boy" — words that carry enormous meaning to those who knew them.
Cats
Cats have an independence and mystique that calls for a memorial as individual as they were. Our cat memorials range from classic polished black granite tablets with a silhouette motif, to full HD portrait panels that capture every whisker and the unique colour of the animal's coat through specialist tinting techniques.
Smaller cats' memorials — suitable for a garden corner or window box setting — start from compact 200mm x 150mm tablets, while larger standing memorials can accommodate full portrait imagery and longer inscriptions.
Horses
Horse memorials require a larger format to do justice to the subject. We typically produce horse memorials as substantial flat tablets — 600mm x 400mm or larger — in premium black or grey granite, featuring the horse's portrait, name, dates, and an inscription that reflects the unique bond between horse and owner.
These are designed to be set flat at a paddock burial site or mounted on a dry-stone wall. Many equestrian families choose to combine the memorial with a stable nameplate-style plaque in a matching design.
Garden vs Pet Cemetery: Where to Place the Memorial
Most pet memorials in the UK are placed in private gardens or on private land, and this is perfectly legal as long as the burial itself complies with local rules. In England and Wales, burying a small pet (dog, cat, rabbit) in your own garden is generally permitted — though you should check with your local council if you are uncertain. Larger animals such as horses cannot be buried in a garden and must go through a licensed knacker or pet crematorium.
If you rent your home or are concerned about leaving the memorial behind if you move, a pet cemetery may be a better option. There are numerous licensed pet cemeteries across the UK — many of which are run to a very high standard, with proper grave plots, defined plots, and permission for granite memorials. Some also offer cremation services, with ashes placed in a memorial plot.
For families who choose cremation, a granite plaque or small headstone can be placed in the garden alongside an ashes casket or simply as a freestanding garden memorial. Garden memorial stakes and flat markers in granite are available from around 100mm x 150mm — small enough to fit discreetly in any outdoor space.
