Granite Chippings for Graves: A Complete Guide

August 12, 2025·4 min read

Granite chippings — also called gravel chips or grave dressings — are one of the most practical and widely used ways to dress a grave plot. They create a clean, well-maintained appearance, suppress weeds within the memorial area, and complement headstones and kerb sets with a natural, appropriate texture.

Types of Chippings Available

  • White granite chippings — the most popular choice, bright and clean against black granite
  • Grey granite chippings — more neutral and subtle
  • Black granite chippings — a striking all-black look
  • Mixed or decorative coloured chippings — available in some settings
  • Slate chippings — popular at natural burial sites

Do You Need a Kerb Set for Chippings?

In most cemetery settings, a defined border — a kerb set or surround — is needed to contain chippings within the grave plot area. Without a defined edge, chippings can spread beyond the plot, causing problems with neighbouring graves. Some cemeteries permit informal chipping within an imaginary plot boundary, but this varies significantly.

Cemetery Regulations

Not all cemeteries permit chippings. Modern lawn-style cemeteries often prohibit them entirely to maintain the lawn appearance of the site. Traditional municipal cemeteries and older sites are more likely to permit them. We always check specific site regulations before recommending chippings.

"A well-dressed grave is an act of ongoing love. Chippings make maintenance simple and the result beautiful."
