Companion Headstones for Couples: What You Need to Know

July 29, 2025·5 min read

A companion headstone — also called a double headstone — is designed to commemorate two people within a single memorial. Most commonly chosen for couples, they create a powerful statement that two lives were shared and that even in death, they remain together. Planning a companion memorial requires some additional thought, particularly when only one partner has died.

How a Companion Headstone Works

A companion headstone divides the face of the stone into two panels — one for each partner. Each panel carries its own name, dates, and personal inscription. When only one partner has died, the second panel is intentionally left blank, designed from the outset to receive the second inscription at a future date with no visible awkwardness or gap in the design.

Key Considerations

  • Confirm with the cemetery that both partners are to be buried in the same plot
  • Check the maximum headstone width permitted at the specific site
  • Decide whether to feature individual portraits, a joint photograph, or no photography
  • Consider whether the same inscription style and lettering should be used for both
  • Discuss with the cemetery how the second inscription will be added in future

Photography on Companion Headstones

Many families choose to feature a photograph of the couple together as the central element of a companion headstone, with individual inscription panels on each side. This creates a beautifully unified memorial that celebrates the relationship itself as much as the individuals.

"Side by side in life. Side by side in memory."
